Where is Cancun?

Cancun is in Mexico.  It is on the southeastern side of the country in a state called Quintanaroo.  Quinatanaroo makes up a portion of what is called the Yucatan Peninsula.

The Yucatan peninsula is famous for it’s beautiful beaches and clear Caribbean sea. The Yucatan hosts some dramatic geographical features. The peninsula isn’t long like the Florida peninsula; it’s more oblique and round.  It stretches out towards the island of Cuba. Many people that visit Cancun take the short flight to Havana to check out the beautiful and enchanting island that is still off limits to American tourists.

The Yucatan is also home to Playa del Carmen, another famous beach resort town that resembles Cancun. Cozumel and Isla Mujeres lies just off the coast of the beautiful peninsula.

The flora is typically jungle. The dark green foliage covers most of the peninsula, hiding its ancient secrets and archeological sites.  The Yucatan was home to the Mayan peoples many hundreds of years ago. Today those memories of a forgotten culture can be revisited at Chichen Itza, the most significant archaeological site in this part of Mexico and Central America.

Cancun is on the eastern tip of this famed peninsula and likewise masses many dark green jungle plants. The water that surrounds Cancun hosts a variety of marine life, including many types of beautifully colored corals, reef sharks, and barracudas–just to name a few. These corals are a popular tourist attraction.Each year 100,000 people or more take snorkel tours out to these famous reefs.

The topography of the Yucatan is a bit boring.  But what is hidden underneath is the real treasure. The peninsula is mostly flat and made of limestone. Limestone is a very weak rock and in many places caves have collapsed, creating sinkholes that have now turned into lakes or swimming-holes. Under the Yucatan is an aquifer, where underground rivers run.  Many of these underground rivers remain uncharted to this day.

There are some small hills, but not many.  To get to the mountains, head south towards the borders with Guatemala and Belize or head to Chiapas.  It is a very mountainous region.

So basically, it is on the Yucatan.  The Yucatan is flat with no mountains and it juts out into the Caribbean Sea.
